Daily Word gives you one secret five-letter word a day and six guesses to find it. After every guess the tiles flip: green means the letter is in the right spot, yellow means it's in the word but somewhere else, and gray means it's not in the word at all. The twist that makes it social: everyone in the world plays the same word on the same day, so you can compare grids with friends without spoiling the answer.

How to play

• Type a 5-letter word with your keyboard or the on-screen keys, then press ENTER.
• Read the colors: green = right letter, right spot · yellow = right letter, wrong spot · gray = not in the word.
• Any 5 letters count as a guess — no dictionary police — so you can probe with letter combos if you want.
• You have 6 tries. Solve it to extend your daily streak; miss it and the streak resets.

What's the best starting word?

In English, the most common letters in five-letter words are E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S and N. A strong opener hits as many of those as possible with no repeats — classics include RAISE, ARISE, STARE and CRANE, each of which tests two or three vowels plus high-frequency consonants. From there, play the odds: a yellow letter usually wants to move toward the middle of the word, most five-letter words have a vowel in the second or third slot, and common endings like -ER, -LY and -CH are worth probing. If you're stuck on your fifth guess, consider a "sacrifice" word that tests several brand-new letters instead of trying to win immediately — information beats hope.
