Minesweeper — play the classic mine-sweeping puzzle free in your browser

Minesweeper is the desk-drawer legend that shipped with Windows for two decades, and the rules haven't aged a day. Under the 9×9 grid hide 10 mines. Reveal a square and it shows a number — how many mines touch it. Use those numbers to deduce where the mines are, flag them, and reveal every safe square. One wrong tap and the whole board goes up.

This version runs free in any browser with no download. Your first click is always safe, zero-squares flood-open automatically, and your best clear time is saved on your device. On a phone, a big 🚩 toggle switches your taps between digging and flagging, so it plays perfectly one-handed.

How to play

• Tap / left-click a square to reveal it. Your first tap is never a mine.
• A number tells you how many mines touch that square (diagonals included).
• Right-click (desktop) or turn on the 🚩 flag toggle (any device) to mark suspected mines.
• Tap an already-revealed number once its flagged neighbors match its count, and every other neighbor opens at once — the classic chord. A wrong flag still costs you: chording digs whatever isn't flagged, mine included.
• Reveal all 71 safe squares to win — flags are optional, speed is everything.
• Press Space or Enter to start a new board (during play they toggle flag mode; F works too).

Minesweeper strategy: win without guessing

Almost every board can be solved with pure logic. The two workhorse deductions: if a number already touches exactly that many flags, every other neighbor is safe — dig them all (that's what tapping the number itself does, via chording). And if a number's remaining hidden neighbors equal the mines it still needs, they're all mines — flag them. Chain those two rules along the border of your opened area and the board unravels. Learn the classic 1-2-1 pattern (mines sit under the 1s) and 1-2-2-1 (mines under the 2s), and you'll clear most boards without a single coin-flip. When you truly must guess, prefer squares that touch the fewest numbers — corners and edges of the unknown region carry the least information and, statistically, the most risk.
