This is a Schulte table โ€” and the trick is to stop looking

The grid isn't an arbitrary layout. It's a Schulte table, named after the German psychiatrist Walter Schulte, who used scrambled number grids in the mid-20th century as a simple bedside measure of attention and visual search. It has been a fixture of attention-training and speed-reading exercises ever since, largely because it needs nothing but a pen and paper and produces a single honest number: how long you took.

The instruction that comes with a Schulte table is always the same and always sounds wrong: fix your gaze on the centre cell and don't move it. Find the numbers with your peripheral vision instead. The reason is arithmetic. Your eyes don't glide across a scene โ€” they jump, in saccades, and between jumps they park in a fixation lasting roughly 200 to 300 milliseconds. Vision is actively suppressed during the jump itself, so a scanning strategy spends real time blind. Hunt for all 25 numbers by moving your eyes and you have paid for at least 25 fixations โ€” five to seven seconds of pure eye-parking โ€” and in practice far more, because you re-scan tiles you've already looked at without realising.

Hold your gaze at the centre and the whole 5ร—5 grid falls inside what researchers call the useful field of view: the area from which you can pull information in a single glance. Acuity drops sharply away from the fovea, but a large bold digit against a plain tile is exactly the kind of high-contrast, low-detail target that survives that drop. You aren't reading the outer tiles so much as recognising their shape โ€” and you already know what you're looking for, which turns the task from reading into matching.

Two practical consequences. First, your first few runs will feel slower with central fixation than without it, because you're overriding a reflex; the payoff comes after a handful of attempts, and it's worth pushing through. Second, once the eyes are still, the bottleneck moves to your finger โ€” which is why the last five numbers, spread across a mostly-grey board, often take longer than the first ten.

Worth saying plainly: this is a game and a bit of self-competition, not a diagnostic. A Schulte time varies with your screen size, whether you're using a thumb or a mouse, and how awake you are, and there's no good evidence that drilling one makes you a faster reader of actual text. Chase your own personal best and enjoy it for what it is.
