Bigger Country — a free country size quiz in your browser
Two countries, side by side with their flags. Tap the one with the larger land area. Get it right and the streak grows; get it wrong and the run is over. That's the whole game, and it is much harder than it sounds, because the mental image almost everyone is working from is a distorted one.
It opens with countries you have a firm opinion about and works steadily toward ones you don't. Free, no download, one tap per round, and your best five streaks are saved on your device.

The map you learned from was lying, and here is exactly how
Nearly every world map in a classroom, and every default web map, uses the Mercator projection. It was designed in 1569 for navigation, and it has one brilliant property: a straight line on the map is a constant compass bearing. That made it invaluable for sailing and it makes it convenient for zooming, which is why it survived into the internet.
The cost is that it inflates area with distance from the equator, and it does so severely. Greenland appears roughly the size of Africa; Africa is about fourteen times larger. Alaska looks comparable to Brazil and is about one-fifth its size. Scandinavia, Canada and Russia are all shown far larger than they are, and everything near the equator — Africa, Indonesia, the Congo Basin — is shrunk to match.
The results in this game follow directly. Algeria is bigger than Greenland (2.38 million km² against roughly 2.17 million), which almost nobody believes at first glance. The Democratic Republic of the Congo alone is about the size of France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom put together — 2.34 million km² against their combined 2.36 million. Sudan, Libya and Chad are each larger than any country in Europe except Russia.
The trap runs the other way too, at smaller scales, where the culprit is familiarity rather than projection. Zimbabwe is larger than Germany. Somalia is larger than Ukraine, the biggest country entirely within Europe. Madagascar is nearly the size of France. Countries you hear about often feel big; countries you don't hear about feel small, and area has nothing to do with either.
So the strategy that actually works: mentally push everything back toward the equator. If one country is tropical and the other is northern, the tropical one is usually bigger than your instinct says — and the further north the other one sits, the more the map has been overselling it.
Area figures come from Wikidata (CC0), spot-checked against published national figures — every country tested landed within 1%. Two countries are never paired unless their areas differ by at least 15%, so no round comes down to a coin flip.
