Most people manage 7Β±2 steps. Chunk the pattern into little shapes to go further.
Sequence Memory β a free pattern memory test in your browser
This is the classic light-pattern memory game: a 3Γ3 grid flashes a sequence, you tap it back in order, and every level the sequence grows by one. Level 1 is one flash. Level 12 is twelve. Somewhere in between, your short-term memory taps out β and that level number is your score.
Each tile has its own musical note, so you can memorize with your ears as well as your eyes. Free, no download, works on any device, and your best level is saved so the rematch against yourself never ends.
How to play
- Watch the tiles light up in sequence β don't click yet.
- When it says YOUR TURN, tap the same tiles in the same order.
- Get it right and the sequence grows by one. One wrong tap ends the run.
Why 7Β±2 is the magic number
Psychologists call it "the magical number seven": most people can hold about 5β9 items in short-term memory. You can beat the limit by chunking β grouping steps into shapes ("L-shape, then diagonal") so three taps become one memory. Musical cues help too, which is exactly why this game has them.
